A Piece of My Mind

On one morning last year, a female patient came to my medical office in Boston. She arrived with a large piece of luggage which attracted my attention. Obviously, she had traveled quite some distance to visit.

After her brief registration, we started to have a conversation. Mrs. L, a very pleasant lady in her 40’s, came from Philadephia by airplane.

She mentioned that she had a history of fibroids problems. After she started menopause, she began to have heavy bleeding with her menstrual period. The bleeding was very heavy and persisted for some time; she lost a good deal of blood, became anemic, and started to feel very fragile and weak. She was diagnosis to have dysfuntion ulterus bleeding. Thus, she searched extensively for medical treatments, including symptom relief medications, D&C, and hormone replacement treatments. But so far, she had only temporary relief, and could easily fall into recurrence. She felt disappointed and became depressed.

Finally, her doctor recommended that she has a hysterectomy. However, Mrs. L was afraid to have one because it was too destructive. Upon a suggestion from a friend Mr. B, Mrs. L came to seek a second opinion, and possibly an alternative treatment, from me.

After the brief physical examination, which showed basically normal results, only some anemia and some mild tenderness in the suprapubic region, we had a detailed discussion.

Other than the conventional approach she had already sought before, she was more interested in whether or not alternative medicine, traditional Chinese medicine, could help her.

Mrs. L was an intellectual woman. She truly wanted to know the theoretical basis of Chinese medicine. So I put effort into explaining to her what traditional Chinese medicine is, and how it could work for her.

I raised the following points:

The human body is a system that consists of two parts: one part physical, one part metaphysical.

The physical part is basically what we see, what we hear, what we learn through experience, science, technology, mathematics, and logic. This knowledge includes anatomy, biochemistry, physiology, pathology and so on. Conventional medicine is knowledge of the physics part of human body system. All this can be learned from a physics approach.

But behind all this, there are still a lot of things that we do not know, for example, energy and it spectrum, multiple level of negative entropy, the relationship between space and time inside the body system, equilibrium, etc. These are part of the human body system, but cannot be learned from the physics approach. These belong to the metaphysical world.

For the western world and western philosophy, the metaphysical world is usually considered religion, spiritual, and God, a world completely separate from the physical one. With this perspective, there can be no approach to connect to the physical part of being.

But in Chinese philosophy and Chinese traditional medicine, there is a very important theory of ying and yang. The ying and yang theory does not involve physics directly, but is more about what is behind the physical world, or metaphysics.  Ying and yang system empphasizes the relationship among the the elements of being, it describes the energy ,negative entropy ,time, space, numbers ,their exists and their interactions. These beings, are not easy to be studied through the current physics methods. Ying and yang theory is some kind of metaphysics. With ying and yang theory, there are many ways to connect physics with metaphysics.

If the body system consists of two parts, so do diseases and disorders. If diseases and disorders are caused by two parts (physics and metaphysics) and we only try to combat one part (use a conventional medical approach to try to correct the physical part of the problem), we may fail in the task. We must do something to correct the metaphysical part, as well. This is precisely why traditional Chinese medicine works.

What was Thus, Mrs. L’s medical condition was not only caused by the problems in the physics of her body system, but also by problems in the metaphysical part. Due to such a complicated condition, conventional medicine only worked on the physics of her situation, and may not be good enough. We need to correct her ying and yang imbalance, her metaphysics, a solution that may bring a significant benefit to her.

With such consideration and also with Mrs. L’s consent, I started to do some treatments for her. I prescribed some Chinese herbs which focused on correcting her ying and yang imbalance.

She came to see me a number of times by airplane. Each time, according to her ying and yang condition, I prescribed some different Chinese herbs for her. Faithfully, she cooked and drank my herbal tea. After the treatments she got better and better. The bleeding stopped, she recovered from anemia, and she had more energy. She may be considered clinically recovered.

Mrs. L is not alone. Her case is one that I frequently encounter in my practice.

Metaphysics  approach for the system being of the world, sounds strange ? No. It is the true great wisdom that has be ignored so long in past. It not only has medical meaning,  also has philosophical meaning.

We must acknowledge that the metaphysical being exists. With significant and great progress in science and technology, now more and more people count on physics for meaning. They ignore metaphysics. They try to use physics to understand the whole being.

For the inorganic world being, the physics approach may be good enough to assess its being. But for the organic world, particular for living systems, metaphysics sometimes may play a more important role than physics. For such conditions, only physics may not be enough to understand the whole being. We need to work on metaphysics.

When we handle living systems, organic systems such as the human body, economic systems, political systems, and religion, we need to be more careful. Such  system not only has physics being, also has metaphysics being. But in the real world, people often only use physics approach to resolve the problems, which cause a lot  of tragic events.

So call the conflicts of civilizations, that pose a great challenge for the human being . There are different civilizations in this world. Some civilizations are more advance in physics aspect,  some civilizations are more mature in  metaphysics aspect.  Any civilization that has long history and popular influence must have reasons and basics for its  existence which can not be ignored. We do have some approachs to study different civilizations, but what civilization is the best for evolution of human being? there is no conclusion yet. Some civilizations have proved to be good for some population, but may be devastated for other population. Some civilizations may proved to be good for development because they active the physics vitality, but may do harm in evolution because they damage matephysics.

How to resolve the conflicts of civilizations? that is serious test for the wisdom of human being. This subject is so complicated , there are no easy answer. Some people try to use physics force to deal with metaphysics problems,  use violent or war to resolve the conflicts of civilizations. That is not only inmoral but also may be criminal for human being.
